On this page I want to show you what hooks are. Hooks are the result of two opposing teeth not being the same size leaving an overgrowth that is usually pointed - thus the name hook. You can have a hook on the incisors that will be visible by lifting the lip, on the front molars (pre-molars) or the very back of the rear molars.
If you see a hook, the horse needs dentistry to correct this mal-occulsion. If you just had your horses teeth floated, they need to come back and correct the hook.
First I am showing you some incisor hooks. These you can see by pulling up the horses lip.
These are two large hooks, many times they will be much smaller.
Below are hooks on the front molars (pre-molars) Usually they are on the top teeth, but once in a while they will be on the bottom going upward.
These are very large upper hooks This is a lower hook - see how pointy?
Now I will show you a picture with one side with a smaller hook before correction and the other side after:

This horse also has a wave complex that is a little hard to see, but if you look at the bottom arcade along the tongue, you can see halfway back how those teeth are higher than those in front or behind. There are also ETR - excessive transvere ridges - ridges going from side to side that are too long. On the upper arcades you can see how uneven the transverse ridges are and how some are excessively longer than others. These mal-occlusions will also need to be corrected. |
