Routine Dental Visits should include checking for missing or out of place teeth, correcting improper occlusion, abnormal wear patterns, sharp ridges, lateral movement & incisor angles. Teeth should be floated & balanced for good occlusion and bit seats rounded.
Tell the dentist if your horse is having any health, eating or performance problems.
Each horse is different especially with wolf teeth. They can come in after 6 months or a couple years. Some horses get four, some only one or two if any. Canines typically come in around age 4 and only in males, but I have seen them in 3 years olds and a few mares.
The deciduous cap (baby teeth) come off predictably -give or take a month or two. It's best to have the caps on all four quadrants removed at the same time so the permanent teeth can grow in together.

#1's Incisor Caps (back set) that didn't come off by themselves - This is a 3 year old used for roping cattle.
We had riding problems with three of our horses - they were between the ages of two and five. Refusal to take the bit, tossing the head, not turning, sticking the tongue out the mouth constantly, one even refused to move under saddle. We came to find out all were related to pain in the cheeks, tongue and TMJ caused by cap and wolf tooth problems. Once corrected - no more behavior problems. We were ready to sell one of them because he was such a pill. Now he's happy and so are we and he's great under bit. Big lesson learned.
